ATHLETICS FIVE WEEKS BEFORE GAMES NOMINATIONS
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND. Mar. 12.
New Zealand track and field men and women had just five weeks left to make tneir claims for a place in the Perth Empire Games team, a national selector. Mr C. Thompson, said in Hamilton today. “Our deadline for nominations is for the first week in May so athletes have until the Easter meetings to produce performances.” he said. “If they feel they are on tiie border-line between selection and rejection, it’s up to them or their centres to arrange races and tn ais for them. “We have been given no limit on the number we can nominate but we are limited by the qualifications of the athletes themselves. They can rest assured that one
good performance in the season isn't enough.” Mr Thompson described the senior and women's national championships on Saturday as a disappointment from the selectors’ viewpoint. “In fact, we got nothing out of there at all.” he said. "However, we have already formed a fair idea from performances through the season.’* he said.
Mr Thompson said no indication had been given of the final strength of the athletic team for Perth but athletes should remember that there would probably be a B list for athletes who produced the required standards and who could travel if their centres provided the money. “For that reason, they should not waste any time or effort in the next five weeks,” he said.
