UNDULANT FEVER

Third Case In Ashburton The third case of brucellosis (undulant fever) in Ashburton this year has been notified to the Timaru district office of the Department of Health. The cases are believed to have been caused by unpasteurised milk from a herd which contributes to toe town supply. When the other two brucellosis cases were notified, officers of the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture said that they bed no power to order the destruction of animals infected by brucellosis or an associated disease, leptospirosis, or to prevent the sale of milk from infected herds. The Medical Officer of Health in Timaru (Dr. W. I. Glass) said that his department would ask all those who regularly drank unpasteurised milk from the infected herd to allow blood tests to be made to check for brucellosis infection. He would visit Ashburton on Monday to discuss the position with interested persons. The Minister of Health (Mr McKay), when asked whether his department was considering legislation to prohibit the sale of unpasteurised milk on town supply or of milk from herds infected with brucellosis or leptospirosis, said this was a policy matter to which he could give no immediate answer.
