Appeal For The Aged
When the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council holds its annual stre?t appeal today the public will be given an opportunity to participate directly in important philanthropic work. During the last nine years the council has proved its worth in co-ordinating the activities of organisations concerned with geriatric welfare and in promoting the development of new services where formerly real hardship was caused through particular problems of elderly residents. Anyone who has read the annual reports of the council must be impressed by the scope and success of the council’s endeavours; but because such a large proportion of
Christchurch citizens are over 60, the need for additional assistance is still great. Increasing costs not only add to the perplexities of the aged; they also aggravate the burdens of the*r helpers. The Aged People’s Welfare Council besides maintaining hostels for the elderly, provides a variety of ancillary services that benefit innumerable persons for whom institutional care is unnecessary. All these amenities can be financed only through the support of the Government, of other social service agencies, of professional bodies, and of the general public. It is tc be hoped that the public will again respond generously to the street appeal.
