CANTERBURY RED CROSS
“Membership Inadequate”
For an humanitarian organisation such as the Red Cross Society, the Canterbury membership of 4300 is extremely inadequate, according to the president of the North Canterbury centre (Mrs R. I. Brake). In an address to members of the society’s Christchurch sub-centre at their annual meeting yesterday afternoon, Mrs Brake said the relatively meagre Canterbury membership did not compare favourably with that of many women’s organisations in the province. In spite of this, Canterbury’s Red Cross membership was still the largest in the Dominion, she said. Appealing for a substantial membership increase, particularly in the younger age group. Mrs Brake said ft was important to realise the great potentialities of the world-wide organisation. Sub-centre Gifts Recipients of money given by the sub-centre during the year included:—Good neighbour service, £7: Christmas parcels for Burwood and Rannerdale Home. £2; emergency cuoboard. £5; comforts for Malayan sick and wounded. £2: 100 per cent disabled servicemen. £3: dried milk for Algerian refugees. £5: for Hong Kong and Korean refugees. £5.
