Producer Boards Decline Membership
(NX. Press Associations WELLINGTON, March 8. A Trade Promotion Council has been set up by the Government to advise on the development of export trade and measures aimed at encouraging expansion of the export of manufactured goods and import incentives. Its 14 members were announced today by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake). None represents the producer boards, and spokesmen for the boards today said they were remaining aloof from the new council as they regarded it as no more than window dressing for work they were already doing efficiently.
Mr Hoiyoake said that the producer boards had been in - vited by both Mr Marshall and himself to be represented on the council, but after discussions they had refused to be associated with it in any way. The members of the council are: Mr K. Campbell, of Wellington, director, Campbell Craig and Company, Ltd., Wellington. Mr S. Findlay, of Auckland, director, Swift (New Zealand), Ltd., Wellington. Mr W. Fisher, of Auckland, managing director, Fisher and Paykel, Ltd., Auckland. Sir David Henry, of Auckland, chairman of directors, New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd., Auckland. Mr R. D. lies, of Christchurch. general manager, Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd., Christchurch Mr J. R. Maddren, of Christchurch, managing director, Maddren Bros., Ltd., Christchurch. Mr S. Mair, of Christchurch. director. Mair and Company. Ltd., Christchurch Mr C. U. Plimmer, of Wellington. chairman of directors. Wright. Stephenson and Company, Ltd., Wellington. Mr P. Plummer, of Waipawa, Hawke’s Bay. member of Dominion council of Federated Farmers and immediate past-chairman of meat and wool section of the Dominion council. Mr S. C. Scott, of Dunedin, managing director, J. Scott and Company. Ltd.. Dunedin Mr A. R. Slmm, of Wellington. director and manager. Townsend and Paul. LtdWellington. Mr J. Wattle, of Hastings, managing director, Wattie i Canneries, Ltd., Hastings. 1 Mr F. P. Walsh, of Wellington, president of Federation of Labour. I Mr J. Yendell. of Hamilton, director. Yendells Furnishers, Ltd., Hamilton. The council will advise the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) and the Government on all matters affecting overseas trade. “More specifically, it will advise on the exploration of new or potential markets, including trade surveys and missions: the co-ordination of promotional schemes, trade fairs and publicity in both old and new markets: the improvement of facilities, both within New Zealand and overseas, which may assist exporters: and the encouragement of public support for exporting and understanding of export problems.” said Mr Holyoake. Mr Marshall would preside at meetings of the council in the meantime. In addition to its present numbers, the council would have power to co-opt additional members and to obtain the assistance of expert advisers. It would also be able to appoint committees to examine specific problems. It would have the secretarial and research assistance of the
department of industries and commerce. “I am pleased that men of such high standing and qualifications have been willing to give their services as a voluntary contribution in the interests of the country and its future prosperity.” said Mr Holyoake. “I am sure the council will make a great contribution to the trade drive which is building up, and that the coordination of effort which results will prove of very real and lasting benefit to New Zealand,’ said Mr Holyoake. Local Members Mr Iles has been general manager of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company since late in 1044. He joined the company in 1913 Mr Iles is a director of the Meat Export Development Company of New Zealand and is also a director of Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd.. Managing director of Maddren Bros., Ltd., Mr Maddren is a director of Donaghys Rope and Twine Company, Ltd., and other companies. He has interests in the export of various food lines. He has been a council member of the Canterbury Manufactuers’ Association for 15 years and was president of the association in 1959 and 1960. Last year he was chairman of industries farm committee. Mr Mair is the founder and chairman of directors of Mair and Company, importers and exporters He is a director of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, deputy chairman of directors of Hays, Ltd., and deputy chairman of directors of the New Zealand Cement Company. He has been in business since 1930.
New Brighton Convent—A permanent residence for the Sisters of the Sacred Heart Convent at New Brighton will be opened and blessed on Sunday by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce). At present the sisters travel from Ferry road to New Brighton each day.
