Labour Split On E.E.C.

The Labour Opposition last night put forward a compromise motion aimed at preventing an open split in the party over the European Common Market
Political quarters said it would be supported by bo’h those Labour members who favoured Britain’s entry into the Common Market and those who thought she should stay out. Party leaders have been trying to find a formula accentable to both sections. The motion says: “That this House requires the following as conditions for entering the European Economic Community: “Guarantees safeguarding the positions of British agriculture. the Commonwealth and the European Free Trade Association countries “That Britain retains her present freedom to conduct her own foreign policy and to use public ownership and economic planning to ensure social progress within the United Kingdonv.” Quadros Back In Brazil <M.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) SANTOS (Brazil), March 8. The former President of Brazil. Mr Janio Quadros, returned to Brazil yesterday to the strains of martial music and the cheers of an estimated 4000 followers. United Press International reported. Representatives of various State governments were on hand to greet Mr Quadros. who was ending six months of voluntary exile after his abdication of power last August His travels included a visit to New Zealand.
£2sm In Death Duties.— The Fermor-Hesketh family, with large estates in Lancashire, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, and interests in the United States, has paid £2.5 million in death duties in the last six years. In that time. Lady Hesketh. widow of the first baron, and two of her sons have died. Each left an estate worth around £1 million.—London, March 8.
