Labour Split On E.E.C.

The Labour Opposition last night put forward a compromise motion aimed at preventing an open split in the party over the European Common Market

Political quarters said it would be supported by bo’h those Labour members who favoured Britain’s entry into the Common Market and those who thought she should stay out. Party leaders have been trying to find a formula accentable to both sections. The motion says: “That this House requires the following as conditions for entering the European Economic Community: “Guarantees safeguarding the positions of British agriculture. the Commonwealth and the European Free Trade Association countries “That Britain retains her present freedom to conduct her own foreign policy and to use public ownership and economic planning to ensure social progress within the United Kingdonv.” Quadros Back In Brazil <M.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) SANTOS (Brazil), March 8.
