RACING Cattle Beats Big Field In Wanganui Gold Cup
"Th« Preu" Special Service NEW PLYMOUTH, March 9. The Wanganui five-year-old, Cattle, followed up his win at Hawera on Saturday by decisively beating a big field in the Caltex Gold Cup, first leg of the double on the opening day of the Taranaki meeting today.
Cattle was always well placed behind Sigh, which tried to lead all the way, Kazaan and Apa. He was a clear leader at the turn and finished with great dash to beat Stipulate, which made up a lot of ground, and Harsh.
Cabriere, backed down to a losing price on the place machine, got away badly in the Boron Thousand, the open sprint and second leg. Uplands Lad. well placed ell the way. got clear after Dart had stretched the field out He survived a strong challenge by Prince Monolulu.
The double. Cattle and Uplands Lad, was worth £72 18s for £l. The weather was fine •nd bright till the sixth race, when a light drizzle set in. There was a fairly large crowd. The track was easy. On-course the totalisator handled £33,021, compared with £33,885 on the corresponding day last year, which was a Saturday. Hot Pace Sigh set • hot pace in the cup. With a mile to run she was just clear of Kazaan, Apa, Cattle, Gauntlet, Harsh and Seretta. with Foxdonna racing wide and Stipulate further back. At the half-mile Sigh still had charge, but Kazaan had
closed the gap and Apa, Cattle and Harsh were handy. Gauntlet was nicely placed on tiie fence. Serretta was next and Stipulate was starting a run.
Cattle swept up on the outer before the turn and he quickly had the measure of Sigh. Harsh and Kazaan were challenging and Stipulate was improving. Cattle soon eliminated the chances of any of the others in the siiort dash to the post. He won by more than a length from Stipulate, which beat Harsh by a length and a halt Dipnoi came on for fourth and Kazaan weakened to fifth. Apa, Dowdex and Earl Robin led in the next bunch and Sigh was one of the last to finish. Second Leg
Dart tried to run the field off its feet in the second leg and with half a mile to go was six lengths clear of Stetson, Waitaha, Prince Monolulu and Uplands Lad.
The favourite, Cabriere, slow to get away, was well
back and trying to save ground along the fence. Dart shortened stride very quickly on the turn, where Uplands Lad surged through from Stetson and Prince Monolulu, with Cabriere continuing his run. Uplands Lad lasted long enough to beat Prince Monolulu by a nose and two lengths away Cabriere took third from Doradeb. Stetson, Waitaha and Lady Lorinda followed.
