Men In Orbit

Sir, Correspondents on this topic of apace appear to be hoaxers or the hoaxed. Of course, others use it as a propaganda opportunity. In spite of all the publicity, I think the whole business is totally unnecessary. This is proved in a budget article published by “Newsweek,” January 29. “Newsweek” reveals that 53 per cent of taxation comes from individual American income

taxes. “Newsweek” then indicates, in an illustration, that 63 per cent, of expenditure goes in space and national defence. In short, more than half the money wrung from ordinary people of America is wasted on space experiments and war preparation. Mention this fact to a New Zealand politician and he suddenly becomes ultra-patriotic and wants to fight. Anyway, Colonel Glenn’s success merely indicates that he was a successful fellow-traveller into space after Gagarin and Titov.—Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, March 5, 1962
