messing about in boats
The top six were R. H. Roberts (Auckland), P. G. Mander (Canterbury), R. J. Watson (Auckland), C. Roberts (Auckland), Pope and D. Bryson (Canterbury).
Seventh equal on points were D. J. Newell (Auckland) and G. D. Hobson (Canterbury); both with claims on a vacancy should one of the first six not be able to travel, which is possible.
There is not only doubt about Pope’s position; Hobson, too, has not really proved himself, although an overseas trip might possibly bring out the best in him.
Newell and L. D. Brookbanks (Auckland) are skippers, with T. J. Speed (Auckland), not far behind them, who have fair claims for inclusion on an all-round basis.
Pope, who finished a hull purchased in Christchurch last season, intends to replace his foam plastic buoyancy with bulkheading before he goes to Sydney. Controversial or not, he is to be admired for the standard to which he has tuned himself and his boat under handicap; for although his club, Aurora, has more than 400 members he is the only Finn skipper among them and is consequently denied the regular class racing that is essential for Improved performance.
