Ceremony In Memory Of Antarctic Explorer
A ceremony to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Captain R F- Scott will be held in front of statute near the Worcester street bridge on Marh 29 The City Council, the o’irletcburch branch of the Antarctic Society, and the Canterbury public relations officer (Mr E G Beckett) are planning the ceremony The Depotv-Msyor fCr H P Smith) said yesterday that •he form of the ceremony had not yet been determined by the council He proposed to bring the matter before •he finance and by-laws committee on March 12 for completion of the details A recommendation would then go before 'he council meeting on March 21 “In view of the tremendous upsurge of interest in the Antarctic which has occurred since the beginning of *he Geophysical Year, and the fact that the Antarctic is virtually around the corner from New Zealand, and Christchurch tn particular, it seems most appropriate to pause for a moment and honour Scott and „ his courageous coinpan ions." Navy and our own armed services.

The Bishop of Chrisgchurch (the Rt Rev. A. K Warren) will be asked to pay a tribute at the ceremony. Wreaths will be laid by the City Council and United States Navy. That part of Worcester street between the bridge and the Chamber of Commerce building will be cloeed during the ceremony
