ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Lambs Sell Soundly; Sheep Prices Improve
Fat sheep tended to recover from last week’s easier trend, and good medium-weight wethers and butchers’ ewes sold soundly, although plain and secondary sorts met restricted demand. The entry was much smaller. Fat lambs sold soundly at late rates. In the fat cattle section, which had another big yarding, steers and heifers made about last week’s prices after a weak opening, but cows were cheaper in sympathy with the lower export schedule. Boner cattle and bulls were also easier.
ith a small entry there was a recovery in veal prices but with heavier entries of fat and store pigs the markets were easier.
FAT LAMBS Fat lambs generally met a good sound sale which was fully firm on last week’s steady prices. The entry showed a decrease to 2442 heed, compared with last week s big offering of 2672 but there were a number of pens of small and plain lambs which were of little more than store quality. Another big consignment of West Coast lambs was forward but the quality was not as good as last week although some good prices were recorded for the tops. Heavy lambs were keenly sought by the trade and there was good demand for prime medium weights. Freezing companies supported the market for good light lambs and there was some inquiry from graziers for unfinished sorts.
The top price was 61s Id for six offered by Mrs J. Smithem (Kotuku). K. Ryan (Rotomau), received 60s 7d for 14. and an undisclosed vendor received 60s Id for 21. A sale ait 58s Id was made by E. J. FAT SHEEP A smaller fat sheep yarding totalled 3531 head, compared with 4432 last week and 3128 the week before. Quality varied and there was quite a big proportion of plain lines. Medium-weight young wethers looked to show a slight improvement but other classes were about firm, although the better quality pens tended to recover some of last week’s drop. There were fewer big heavy young wethers penned. Plain sorts were hard to sell and older wethers met an average demand at about last week's prices. With fewer ewes forward the best tended to firm by 3s to 4s a head, recovering fully last week’s easing, put there was still a limited demand for the plain sorts. Wholesale buying was spasmodic but helped to increase competition for the medium-weight lines. Ewes with heavy pelts again commanded a worthwhile premium. Wethers sold to 61s Id for 18 offered by L. Payne (Springston). Sales at 59s Id were made by Misses N. and M. Stringer (Amberley) with three. F. B. Mayson (Rakaia), S. Henderson and Son (Bankside) with 14, and B. H. Cameron (Ladbrooks). V. W. FAT CATTLE Although the fat cattle yarding showed a slight increase to 390 head, compared with 376 last week, there was a sound sale for good quality steers and heifers at about current rates. Cows, however, tended to ease in sympathy with the drop in the schedule. The sale opened on a slack note and the early pens sold did not display top quality but about half-way through when the better lines were offered there was an Improvement and sales over the latter half of the sale were fully firm. While there were a few sales which looked to be dearer there was little change over-all on last week's closing prices. McDonnell Bros. (Totara Flat) had an outstanding sale of seven steers at an average of £52 9s. The line sold from £5l 17s 6d to £53 2s 6d. A sale of two at £52 7s 6d was made by A. P. Smith (Springbank). Bruce Bros. Store Cattle A smaller store cattle offering totalled 137 head, compared with 276 last week, and was largely made up of boner cows. An odd pen of steers suitable for graziers made about current rates but for all other classes the market was weaker with boner types reflecting the drop in the export schedule. A iSen of nine 18-month Aberdeen Angus steens from W. J. Hoban (Culverden) in very good condition realised £29 18s fid and two pens of Shorthorn cross steers of similar age made £2l 18s 6d to £22 18s fid. In the market at present there is Itttle inquiry for other than wellbred cattle and cattle of mixed breeding have not been in demand. Sales included:—
New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Association, Ltd., sold; on account of client, 19 18 months Shorthorn cross steers at £2l 18s 6d to £22 18s fid.
Dalgetv and New Zealand Loan. Ltd., sold: on account of W. J. Hoban (Darham Hill), 9 18 months Aberdeen Angus cross steers at £39 18s fid.
BULLS There were 19 bulls offered, compared with 17 last week, and most of these were of light to medium quality. Values showed an easing in reflection of the drop in the schedule of 5s per 1001 b. Heavier bulls sold from £39 8s 6d to £49 12s 6d, with medium at £25 12s 6d to £36 7s fid and light and small at £l5 18s 6d to £25 17s 6d.
DAIRY CATTLE The dairy cattle entry totalled about 50 head, compared with 47 last week and nearly all of these were Friesian heifers of varying quality. Some very good well-grown three-year-old Friesian heifers were forward. The sale opened on a slack note before a small gallery of buyers and throughout the sale only the best found buyers readily at about late rates, but the secondary sorts, particularly the smaller heifers, tended to be easier by 40s to 60s a head. There were quite a number of passings. Good second, third, and fourth calvers made £3O to £4O. Best Friesian heifers sold at £5O to £56, with good at £4O to £47, average £33 to £39 and others made down to £23. VEALERS With a smaller entry of 120 head in the veal pens, compared with about 250 last week, values showed a marked improvement of about 30s a head which largely recovered last week’s sharp easing. Quality was improved and there was a good (selection of all classes. While there were not as many large runners forward there were some very good medium-weights and there was a particularly good offering of small prime calves which met a sound sale. Medium to large runners sold at £24 12s fid to £29 7s 6d and small runners £2O 7s 6d to £23 17s 6d; large suckers made £2O 7s 6d to £22 17s 6d, medium suckers £l6 17s fid to £l9 12s 6d and small suckers £l4 7s 6d to £l6 7s 6d; large calves realised £l6 7s 6d to £l9 17s fid, medium calves £l2 17s fid to £l5 17s fid and small calves £6 18s fid to £l2 7s 6d. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was practically double that of last week and was largely made up of weaners and slips. The gallery following the sale was smaller and competition was restricted. Large stores maintained late rates but other classes were easier by 5s to 10s a bead. Values were:— Small weaners, 35s to 50s. Best weaners. 54s to 80s. Slips. 63s to 755.
