Polo SAVILE CUP

Play Begins In Rain (N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. March 5. Though conditions tended to turn the play, the last match in particular, into a form of water polo on horseback. the New Zealand Polo Association's annual tournament for the Savile Cup made a promising start to a week of competition at Morrinsville today. In the cup competition proper. Taupiri defeated Hawke’s Bay by eight goals to five and Morrinsville. which was runner-up for the cup last year, beat Cambridge 4-1 after lagging 0-1 at half-time.

in the junior cup. Wainiai B beat Auckland B by six goals to four after leading at one stage 5-1. In the only other game, Kihikihi C beat Auckland C by nine goals to four in the first round of the Stead Cup. Conditions could not have been more discouraging. There had been a great deal of rain overnight and the junior teams in the morning battled away in occasional rain.

Soon after midday. Taupiri and Hawke’s Bay met in a thickening gloom and this turned into the most dismal of downpours for the final game between Morrinsville and Cambridge. Conditions tonight were unpromising and if there is no improvement tomorrow, it is possible that play will be postponed. A decision is to be made at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning. The teams were:—

Taupiri A: H. Wilson. B. Baker, R. B. Walker. J. McCurdy.

Hawke’s Bay: F. Mackenzie, J. Chambers. J. R. Mackenzie. B. W. Mackenzie. Morrinsville A: J. Elliott. G. Howlett, G. Browne, G. M. Spence. Cambridge: John Watson, J. Pegg, Jun Watson, J. G. Arnold.

Scorers: For Taupiri, Walker (7), Wilson; For Hawke's Bay, A. F. Mackenzie (2), J. R. Mackenzie, Chambers. B. W. Mackenzie; For Morrinsville, Browne (21. Elliott, Spence; for Cambridge. Pegg.
