Fireworks Kill 17 In Teheran

TEHERAN, March 5. More than 100,000 fireworks exploded in the basement of a house in southwest Teheran last night, killing 17 people, injuring 10 others, and demolishing five houses, police said today Associated Press said that 70 injured were taken to hospital. Most of the victims, who included six children, were fast asleep when the explosion occurred. About 70 people were admitted to hospital, many in a serious condition.
An eye-witness said: “When the explosion came I thought an atomic bomb had exploded over Teheran. Within a few minutes I found myself in the middle of debris and then came the fire from other houses. The fireworks were stored by a businessman for the Persian national celebrations on March 20, AP. said. Police had arrested the man, Vansour Kerametu, and charged him with illegal storing of explosives in a residential area.
