Gate Down At Rotherham Show

Fine weather and good entries made for a successful day the Amun Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show at Kotherham on Saturday. The attendance, however, was not as big as last year.

Entries for the show totalled 2666, an increase of 16 on last year. Sheep entries numbered 4(1 (502 last year), wool 17 (27) and horses 370 (397), but the decreases were ?o^ e u p or by cookery 152 (95), needlework 138 (63) and flowers at 356 were up nearly 100 on last year. Other sections showed fewer variations.

Gate-takings were down on last year with £77 18s being taken, compared with £B7 15s. However, there has been an increase in membership.

The grand parade was led by the North Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band. Staff flourishing was performed by the drum major, Mr K. Gebbie, who tossed his staff high into the air, recovering it with a dexterous twirling. The champion hack, Mrs E G. Rutherford’s Blue Smoke, headed the line of prize-winning horses and ponies and was followed by the reserve champion, Mrs B G Rutherford’s High Noon. An added feature of the show was a tractor-driving competition in which a tractor and trailer had to be driven through a series of drums and then reversed through the line back to the start. Judges' Comments The sheep section is a strong feature of the Amuri show and the judges commented on the generally good standard of the entries Fine-wool sheep predominated and. although the lambs and younger sheep were not quite as big as last year because of the very dry season, breed quality was of a high standard. The wool was in very good order. Judging the Merinos. Mr A A. Urquhart (Mount Somers) said that although there were on y two competitors, the sheep were quite satisfactory. He considered that more attention could be paid to the hind legs —some of the entries were too ciose-hocked. The top sheep were very good and the wool was in very good condition. Weil-filled classes in the Romney section pleased the judge. Mr K. N. Allen (Masterton), who said that the sheep were a great improvement. The champion ram, which was shown by C. Burrows, was comparable to many in the North Island where it would hold its own in competition. The champion ewe was shown by F. Brice. The standard of the Corriedale sheep as a whole was a credit to the district, the judge, Mr J. H. Grigg (Longbeach). said. The aged ram class, which included W. Dampier-Crosslcy’s champion and the D. S. Johns trust reserve champion, was very good with the sheep very well brought out. Toe two-tootn open ram class was quite good and the ram lambs were well brought out but throughout the section the natural condition classes were disappointing, probably because of the adverse season. In some years the natural condition sheep were almost as good as the open classes. Mr Grigg said. There were big entries of Corriedale ewes of very good quality and the judge. Mr R. Robinson (Ashburton). awarded the championship to the D. S. Johns trust and the reserve championship to R. M. Thomson. Halfbred sheep were of a good standard and both the ewe and ram championships were awarded to C. Burrows. Tile champion ewe award was made for an outstanding entry in the one-shear class. Mr E. V. Murray judged the rams and Mr L. Jenkins the ewes. English Leicesters and Border Leicesters were of a good standard and the sheep were well brought out. said Mr H I. Robinson (Woodend). who judged the sections. The top sheep were in excellent order and there was quite good competition. Southdown ram hoggets pleased the judge. Mr J J. Wyllie (Omihi), and throughout the Southdown section the entries were up to standard. The ewe classes were judged by Mr D C. McMillan (Irwell), who also judged the Dorset Horns and South Suffolks. These lacked competition. Considering the year the flock sheep were in very good condition and the judge. Mr S. E. McLean (Omihi) said there were good entries of evenly-matched s eep. particularly in the Young Farmers' Club classes. Entries in the wool section were of an over-all quality equal to that of a metropolitan Show. said Mr J. Dwyer (Christchurch). who was the judge. There were excellent entries of Corriedale ewe fleeces and tt was commendable to see such a good showing of Merino wool. The standard in the class for Corriedale or halfbred fleeces from sheep pastured above IsOOft showed that this class of country in the district had enjoyed a growing season in the last year which bad been better than the previous three seasons. Mr Dwyer said. Anotber Success Mrs E. G. Rutherford's Blue Smoke scored another major success in taking the champion hack award and the reserve champion was Mrs B. G Rutherford’s High Noon. The judge of the hack classes. Mr P Brophy (Cheviot), said that apart from these two horses, which were outstanding, the rest of the hacks were of * good standard for a country show Entries were big enough to give some competition in the different classes. There was a good showing of ponies with a big representation of outside entries, which added to the competition and over-all standard of the riding and pony classes. In the judging competitions there was a good standard of riding. The champion hunter was K. Jones's Alabama Lady. Mr Brophy said the pony jumping was excellent and although the ring was hard there was a food standard in the FE.I and unting classes. There was a good standard of entries in the grain, seeds and p.-oduce section, said the judge. Mr L. K. Jones (Christchurch). For the season, the ryegrass entries were very good, but there were not as manv samples of clover entered In the wheat classes two samples of Aotea were outstanding and there were also two good samples of Hilgendorf. he said.
