PASSENGER KILLED

Sheep Truck Leaves Road (NX. Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 4. A passenger was killed and the driver injured at 5.30 p.m. today when a fullyladen sheep truck and trailer left the foot of the northern motorway and plunged more than 20 feet into the concrete velocity channel of the Leith stream. The man killed was David James Allan, aged 22, single. His mother is Mrs Lucy Allan, of 16 Wansbeck street, Oamaru. The driver is John Mervyn Wilson, of Alina road, Oamaru. He suffered only minor injuries, but was admitted to the Dunedin Hospital for observation. The truck was owned by Transport Oamaru, Ltd., and was carrying about 200 fat lambs from North Otago to the Burnside freezing worksThe truck, apparently out of control, shot off the end of the motorway, crashed through the Botanic Gardens wrought iron fence, and finished up in the concretelined velocity channel. On impact the sheep tray slid forward, crushing the cab, and pinning the passenger. A mobile crane and cutting torches were used but it was 40 minutes before the fatally injured passenger was freed.

The driver was clear of the cab just before the truck crashed.
