Live Shell

Dragged Up (N.Z. Pres» Association) AUCKLAND. March 4. A high-explosive 4in shell was dragged up by a Harbour Board dredge working in the reserve fleet basin at the Devonport naval base this week. This was confirmed by the Navy today. The shell was immediately taken to the Kauri Point ammunition depot and will be dumped at sea along with other useless ammunition “at the earliest opportunity." The Navy’s chief staff officer (Commander M. J. McDowell) said there was “an element of danger" when the shell was lifted from the water and exposed to the air. As the shell dried the danger would increase.
