U.K. Moves Closer (N.ZJ’.A.-Reuter—Copyrlflht) LUXEMBOURG. March 3-
Britain today officially applied for membership of the six-nation European Coal and Steel Community. The application, which was contained in a letter from Mr Macmillan to the president of the community's Council of Ministers, Mr Antoine Spinoy, said the British Government "wishes to open negotiations with a view to adhering to the treaty setting up the European Coal and Steel Community" The Council of Ministers is expected to examine the British application at its next session in Luxembourg on March 13. If Britain joins, the pool's production of coal will rise to 400 million tons a year. This is more than double its present output and more than that of either the United States or the Soviet Union. , Steel production would reach nearly 100 million tons, about equal to that of the United States and greater than that of the Soviet Union On Monday. Britain is expected to apply in Brussels for membership of Euratom. The coal and steel pool creates a common market for coal, steel, iron ore. and scrap, and harmonises the policies of members Euratom promotes the development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
