LICENSING SCHEDULE

Imports For Year (N.Z. Press Association) QUEENSTOWN. March 4. The 1962-1963 import licensing schedule will be released on Monday, March 12, the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) announced at the annual conference of the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation. “Do not expect spectacular changes,” said Mr Shelton. "I know retailers have their own particular problems but you may be assured that the Government is aware of your problems and is doing its best to ensure that the greatest possible volume of goods consistent with national economic stability, is made available to consumers.”

Mr Shelton spoke of the “tremendous” effort by some departmental officers in preparing the schedule. As a new Minister of Customs he had been dismayed by the prospects of a schedule with new nomenclature and 4000 item groupings that reduced the number down to less than 1000. Mr Tarrant, of Industries and Commerce, and Mr Laking, of the Customs Department, had both been working 16 hours a day on the schedule.

It would be ready to issue on Tuesday or Wednesday said the Minister but the Government printer had a mammoth task. Supplies of the schedule could be short initially in some centres, and he hoped for tolerance.
