“One That Got Away” It is difficult to say which man received the greater airprise when a salmon fisherman hooked the skipper of a passing Firm class yacht on the Waimakariri river on Saturday. The unfortunate yachtsman, G. Hobson, was at the helm of his craft, Fintere. in a Finn championship race when the hook at the end of the fisherman’s line caught securely in the seat of his trousers. After a frenzied struggle Hobson managed to free himself but the hook stuck in a portion of the boat and the line parted. Fintere was second in the race. No Shovellers Mechanisation has ruined training facilities for the once popular sport of shovelling. The Sydney “SunHerald” reported yesterday that it searched Sydney in vain for top shovellers in the gravel business when a New Zealand building company asked for two Australians to take part in a contest at the Auckland Easter Show. “No shovellers of championship calibre could be found around Sydney’s quarries, local councils, or gravel dumps,” the “Sun-Herald” said. “One quarry manager gloomily reported that today a man in the metal moving business would sooner pick up a black snake than a shovel.” Duke On Form The Duke of Edinburgh today practised polo and voiced some forthright views on abstract art as he toured Santiago on the second day of his visit to Chile. At a British Council art exhibition he stepped back startled as he came face-to-face with an abstract painting of blue spokes. “Who perpetrated this?” he asked. When introduced to the “perpetrator,” the bearded Chilean artist. Guillermo Nunes, the Duke said: “But where do you get these ideas? In the bath?” —Santiago, March 3. Memorial To King To mark the reign of King George VI, the St. Heliers Beautifying Society has planted a kauri glade in the Dingle Dell reserve, and a commemorative plaque has been placed in a special stone seat overlooking the dell and Mount Rangitoto. The plaque was unveiled yesterday afternoon by Mr R. D. Muldoon, member of Parliament for Tamaki. He believed, said Mr Muldoon, that the kauri glade was the only memorial to King George VI in New Zealand.—(P A.) Council Chamber As part of the celebration of the centenary of local body government in Christchurch, the City Council will hold its next meeting at the old Council Chamber, now the Chamber of Commerce, on March 21, the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) said yesterday. The first council was set up in February, 1862, being incorporated by the Municipal Council Ordinance of the Province of Canterbury of 1860. The first meeting was held on March 3. 1862. French Plane Due The Morane - Saulnier Rallye, a new light French aircraft, is expected at Christchurch Airport today in the course of a Dominion-wide demonstration tour. The aircraft should have arrived yesterday but was prevented by bad weather. Demonstrations will be given before members of the Canterbury Aero Club. The Rallye can carry three persons and is fully aerobatic.
