Detection Of Student Defaulters

The Victoria University Council has followed excellent precedents in refusing the Labour Department access to confidential records of its students; but the’-e appears no reason why an unexceptionable way should not be found to achieve the purpose of the department’s request: the detection of breaches of the National Military Service Act Employers who knowingly retain in their service for more than a week any person who is required to register for military training, but who has failed to do so, are liable to prosecution under

the act. It is therefore normal practice for an employer to assure himself that prospective employees have registered. Universities enrolling students could surely adopt this practice also. Among the information already sought from each student upon enrolment is the date of his birth. It would not be unreasonable for all male students within specified age limits to be asked for proof that they have discharged a legal responsibility to the State, from which almost all the money for higher education is derived.
