South Brighton, R.S.A., Sumner and United; February 26, night tournament* at Beckenham and Sydenham; February 27, night tournament at Cashmere; February 28, night tournaments at South Brighton and Spreydon. 1

In a keenly contested game, G. Gibbs and H. Wotton beat R. Rolland and W Hosking (skip) in the final of the Beckenham club’s pairs championship, 23-20.

A good game was played in the final of the Sumner club’s pairs championship between R. Main and F Cassidy (skip) and A. MacDougall and J. Bamford (skip). After the first half of the board, Bamford was leading, 14-15, but Cassidy closed the gap on the nineteenth end to 14-17. A splendid trail by Cassidy for four on the next head, took him into the lead and with a three on the last end. he ran out the winner, 21-17.

Except when the score was level on the turn of the board, H. W. Swallow had a comparatively easy win over R. Powell in the Sumner club’s fours championship, 22-14.

The president of the Christchurch District Bowlin« Umpires’ Association (Mr J. T. Butler) has replied to a correspondent “Fair Play,” whose letter appeared in this column on February 15 Mr Butler says the correspondent’s first complaint that an umpire reprimanded a player “for having his toe on the mat” is answered by Laws 55 and 56. "May I remind him that a player taking his stance prior to greening his bowl must stand with both feet wholly on the mat and wholly behind the distinctive line thereon, and at the moment of delivery have one foot wholly within the confines of the mat and not forward of the distinctive line “If the player to whom he refers only had his toe on the mat, surely he would agree that that player was foot-faulting to a great degree. Possibly ‘Fair Play’ does not know that cheating half an inch off the side of the mat means a gain of 12in at the kitty end.

“His second complaint Is that, ‘in one of the final matches in the Dominion singles competition. B McDonald was faced, not only by a good bowler, but by one who was a good yard off the mat when he delivered each bowl.’

“It may interest ‘Fair Play’ to learn that I watched, and checked each of the last six players to play in the singles. I watched for delivery of the bowl after the foot crossed the line on the front of the mat from the only position where than can be done on the green, and that is some 60 to 70 feet away

from the player and in a direct line with the front of the mat. I am assured that each of these players played well within the laws governing the game.

“If Tair Play’ was behind the bowler, he could not possibly make a decision, and to me, it was very unfair of ‘Fair Play’ to state that one player cheated with every bowl he delivered.

“In conclusion, may I invite ‘Fair Play’ to join our Umpires’ Association, where he might, with profit to himself, learn something of the laws of the game, and thus help ensure that the laws be kept making the game fair for all. Failing this, if Tair Hay’ would care to discuss this further with me, I would be quite happy to meet him,” Mr Butler says.

T. Joyce and R. Pirrie retained their title in the Dallington club’s pairs championship when they beat A. Duthie and E. Greenwood in the final, 19-16. Other semifinalists were C. Barrett and A. Duthie and F. Reaby and V Sharp.

The Sydenham four of F. Wise, E. C. Bailey, A. D Smith and W. J. Reynolds (skip), won the Todd Cup in an all-day tournament at the Allenton green recently.

Visiting bowlers have once again given the Nelson centre very generous snpport for it* Easter fours tournament. Of the 60 entries received last week, 20 were from the Christchurch centre, 12 from Wellington and eight from West CoastBuller. The closing dates for entries is March 5, and it is expected that entries for this popular tournament will be more than 100. The greens in Nelson have benefited from recent rains and by Easter good playing conditions should prevail. Christchurch Centre Team
