LATIN ORATORY COMPETITIONS
Lack Of Prizes
The Canterbury Junior Chamber was asked on Tuesday evening if it provide a prize towards the Classical Association's annual Latinspeaking competitions for secondary school pupils. Making the appeal Dr. J. L. Moffat, guest speaker at the chamber's annual dinner, said that the association of which he was a member had 27 members and last year had a record number of entries for the competitions. “It was unfortunate that there were insufficient prizes,” said Dr. Moffat.
“Some of the association officers gave awards privately but generally we just had to run off some mimeographed certificates for the youngsters which was. to say the least, disappointing for them.” As the Junior Chamber seemed to lay great store in oratory Dr. Moffat thought it might be a fine gesture if it -was to consider making a prize.
A visitor to Lyttelton is the six - year - old Norwegian freighter, Blue Master, which was named after a popular brand of cigarette sold in Norway. In the picture above the 8791-ton Blue Master is shown loading grain from an elevator at Vancouver for Communist China on a previous voyage.
