FISHERMEN PROTEST
Japanese Nets Of 2in Mesh (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 20. A portion of a Japanese fishing net picked up by a west coast trawler between the Manukau and Kaipara harbours recently has a bare two-inch mesh compared with the four-inch mesh used by New Zealand fisherman.
Auckland fishermen say the small mesh used by the Japanese is the reason they have had the poorest snapper season for nearly 20 years. •‘Nothing—not even a sprat —would get through this Japanese net,” the president of the Auckland Fishermen’s Association (Mr E. C. Mansfield) said today. The New Zealand fourinch mesh lets undersize snapper through. Mr Mansfield said fishing would continue to get worse as long as the Japanese were permitted to use narrow mesh nets within three miles of the shores.
“They’ve got a stranglehold on New Zealand fishermen” he said. “The only way to release it is to extend the territorial limit.”
