Christchurch Traffic

Sir, —Your recent leading article and Cr. McLean’s previous remarks on this subject were interesting. I am unable to agree with the suggestion of Cr McLean for subways ir. the Square, expensive as they are. There is little justification for them in this small centre. The answer is to compel motorists to conform to the regulations on single zones and there would then be ample facility for pedestrians to use these zones in safety. Admittedly there is too much motor traffic through the Square, and some of it should be banished to other entries. What should be a pleasant rendezvous is now hideous. Cr. McLean’s proposal for a ring road may be a relief from the existing turmoil. When is the master plan coming to light?—Yours, etc.. VERB SAP. February 6, 1962.
