Harewood Runway Extension
Sir, —The futility of extending the main runway is emphasised by your recent leading article on navigation aids. This called for a general nation-wide improvement and for a particular improvement at Christchurch, where the aids are “rudimentary.” Why, then, spend money on the runway extension when the Civil Aviation Administration can afford nothing better than substandard operational equipment for the present runways? As part owner, the City Council owes it to the travelling public and to its ratepayers to see that its airport is at least operationally adequate. Far better then to lend the Government money to install essential basic aids for the existing airport than for the extension of the main runway. Even if lengthened it would not take regular jet services until the additional associated aids could be provided. The prospect of that being done within the next few years is beyond consideration.— Yours, etc., FIRST THINGS FIRST. February 18, 1962.
