DESERT CHIEF
Doubt About Start
"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, Feb. 15. Desert Chief, one of the early favourites for the Otago Handicap. the feature event and the first leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club's T.A.B. double on Saturday. will not start if the track is heavy, said his Dunedin owner, Mr G. Barton, today.
Mr Barton said that the Ruthless horse was not a good galloper in bad ground and he did not want to risk running him under top-weight of 9-5. Bronze Knight was scratched from the Dunedin Handicap, the five furlong sprint for two-year-olds. The smart Jekyll gelding will be reserved for the second day of the meeting, when he will be ridden by R. J. Skelton.
W. P. Hogan, the Washdyke trainer, who is quartered at Wingatui at present, said that Cantelo (Centra! Improvers' Handicap. Yukon River (Tria! Stakes), and Panam (Tradesmens Handicap) would not start on the first day of the meeting unless there was an improvement tn the track conditions. Heavy rain fell during the morning but the weather cleared this afternoon.
