(N.Z.PA.-Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO, February 14 A 16-year-old Japanese deckhand spent 14 hours in wintry seas trying to swim back to his ship, according to reports published here today. The youth, Kenichi Oyama, fell off the 384-ton Hirohata Maru at 8 a.m. yesterday The ship and other vessels searched for the youth but at nightfall had given up hope. At 10 p.m. the youth was found unconscious. He later told his crewmates he thought a fishing boat had picked him up but the next thing he remembered was clinging to a rope ladder from the side of the Hirohata Maru. He climbed aboard, and then lost consciousness again on deck.
