A personal assurance that he would do all he could to hasten the operation of antidumping procedure is reported to have been given by Mr Selwyn Lloyd, Chancellor of the Exchequer, when he addressed in private a joint meeting of the Finance and Labour Committee of the Conservative Party. He is said to have added that this was primarily a Board of Trade responsibility. Cure for Troubles Reports state that one backbencher suggested that balance of payments troubles could be more easily and quickly cured by cutting imports than by expanding exports. He urged the Government to take stronger steps than hitherto in stopping . indiscriminate dumping. There was special need of this regarding imports which harmed agriculture and were partly restponsible for high deficiency payments to farmers.
