FROM THE ROAD RACE MEETING.—TOP: The winner of the Waimate 50 road race for 1962, the Hamilton driver, J. Palmer, going into the difficult Victoria terrace bend at speed on the closing lap of the race. LEFT: P. Hoare, in his V-12 Ferrari, pursued Palmer hotly throughout the race. Hoare’s second place won him the Association of New Zealand Car Clubs’ Gold Star Award for 1962. LOWER LEFT: The Victoria terrace corner claimed several victims during the meeting. Here, during the event for New Zealand Specials and Racing Cars, M. Hammond in his Buckler Mark 90 (No. 50) swerves to avoid C. A. Shaw’s N.A.T. Special. Shaw took the corner a little too fast and spun in front of the following cars. Hammond and other drivers managed to avoid him, and seconds after this photograph was taken he recovered and continued the race. BOTTOM: The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) presents Palmer with the winner’s laurels.
