REPLICA OF ENDEAVOUR

Plan Shelved By Committee

(N Z Press Association) AUCKLAND. Feb. 15.

A plan for building a replica of Captain Cook’s ship Endeavour has been abandoned.

Because of the impossibility of raising an estimated £300.000 to build, equip and sail the ship from Britain to New Zealand, the Auckland Endeavour Committee decided to shelve the plan for an indefinite period. The original plan, said the chairman, Mr G. C. Beckett, had been to raise the money by public subscription, but it was agreed at the meeting that in view of the sum involved and the present economic situation. this would now be impossible.

Quotes of about £200,000 each for the ship had been received from two British shipyards.
