FIXTURES IN CITY

Diary Scheme To

Avoid Clashes

A scheme to avoid clashes among street appeals, sporting fixtures, and conferences has been advanced by the Lions’ Club and will be worked out in co-operation with the Canterbury Public Relations Officer (Mr E. G Beckett) and the City Council. Two diaries of coming fixtures will be kept. One diary will be for the perusal of the public, and the other for tentative bookings which will be kept confidential until they are confirmed Mr Beckett said recently that appeals, sports gatherings and conferences which have to be planned well ahead, often clash. “Often we do not hear of them until too late to avoid a clash, and we do not have time to advertise them as we would like.” he said.

“From the point of view of street appeals it is often embarrassing when one organisation plans an appeal and arranges a date, actually committing itself, only to find that some other equally deserving cause has launched a similar campaign for the same date.’’

The public, or master diary, covering North Canterbury, had already been started because it was something that could be got under way at once, said Mr Beckett. It would be of great help in compiling the monthly guide to Christchurch and also “Coming Events," published for the Whole of New Zealand by the New Zealand Travel and Holidays Association. “This scheme will not work satisfactorily unless organisations let us know in advance what is coming up Obviously, we cannot be expected to know what is being planned unless we are told," Mr Beckett said.
