CULVERTS AT BENMORE

Unprecedented Scale Of Work

Construction of the diversion culverts at the Benmore hydro-electric power project called for a programme of rock excavation and concrete placing on a scale not previously attempted in New Zealand, Mr S. M. J. Smith told the annual conference of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers in Christchurch. Mr Smith is resident engineer in charge of the diversion culvert and spillway construction at Benmore.

During the peak, 150 men were employed on the site and all possible use was made of modern mechanical equipment, he said. The completed structure cost £1.220.000. The excavated channel, which was 2300 ft long, involved the removal of 409.000 cubic yards of rock in seven months, he said.

The 1440 ft concrete structure, consisting of two horse-shoe-shaped barrels, each 41ft high and 25ft wide, required 95.700 cubic yards of concrete and this was placed in 11 months.
