TAXATION ON OVERTIME

Freezing Workers Refused Rebate (N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS. Feb. 14. The Minister of Finance (iMr Lake) has refused the Whaikatu Freezing Workers’ Union request for a reduction in income tax on overtime earned while coping with the Hawke’s Bay drought kill The union had been advised of the Minister’s decision by Mr D C. Seath. his Parliamentary under-secre-tary. Mr Seath said: “I think it would be unfair to other sections of the community to recognise those efforts by reducing the rate of tax on overtime earnings.” Administratively, such a nrovision would be virtually impossible to operate, he said. Mr R. Adams, president of the union, said: “It is ridiculous to suggest there are administrative difficulties. In 1936 there was a drought in Taranaki, and workers there were a’krii to work abnormal hours To induce them to do so. the Labour Government abolished all income tax on such work by these men.”
