CHAIRMAN REPLACED BY TRIUMVIRATE

A triumvirate replaced the retiring chairman of the Christchurch Junior Council (Mr R. K. Godfrey) at a meeting of the council last evening. The three elected members will now share the responsibility of office and each will be responsible for only two or three of the council’s sub-committees. No nominations for the office of chairman were received.

Speaking in support of his own motion Mr J. M. Wood said that it was not possible for members to mix the position of chairman with other duties at a time when they were trying to establish themselves in a career. “If we have three at the top they will have the opportunity of conducting meetings in turn and they will each be able to strive for their own subcommittee.’’ he said. Mr Wood said that a

single chairman had to give the office his undivided attention, and bo be able to get along with City Council members, and seek their help and relate the Junior Council’s work more closely with theirs. He also suggested that the council should take steps to organise a comprehensive course on meeting procedure and chairmanship. Mr G. H. Reddell said that there was hardly sufficient of an organisation left in the Junior Council to warrant a chairman. He said there were only those left in it who had been doing all the work. “We are trying to play at being a council when we are not representative and not operating. We have got to have new life and reform ourselves.” he said.

The representative of the Christchurch District Young Farmers’ Club (Mr V. A. Rivers) said he would have to report to his district committee that the Junior Council was still of little benefit to the club, and that the club could be of little benefit to the council. “The weakness of the council is that we have not got enough clubs tied into it. W’e should be able to do a two-way-deal with them,” he said. Mr Wood, who was elected as one of the triumvirate members, said the council should approach church bodies and social and sporting organisations with the object of getting clubs affiliated to the council. He said this would give the council the opportunity of helping them and the council would receive help in return.

Mr Wood suggested to the council that an advisory council could be set up for children leaving school, which would cover such things as the legal system, accountancy and hire purchase agreements. “The council lacks representation with the City Council. There is no use in our being a body out on a limb. We must find out what they are doing and we can then help' them a great deal." he said.

Officers elected were: triumvirate. Messrs J. M. Wood. J. Francis and J. A. Cooke: public relations committee. Messrs J. M. Wood. J Francis. J. A. Cooke, and R. K. Godfrey; Crichton Cobbers’ Club management committee representative, Mr R. A. Ross.
