Mr F. Young, Prominent Union Leader, Dead

WELLINGTON, February 14

A well-known trade union leader was fatally injured when he fell in the office of the Tourist and Publicity Department in Wellington today He was:

Frederick George Young, aged 13, of Auckland, national secretary of the Hotel Workers' Federation. Mr Young was one of the most prominent and colourful personalities in the Labour movement in New Zealand for 30 years. Mr Young was in Wellington to attend a meeting of the Tourist Hotel Corporation directors at 930 a m He had not arrived in the board

room and soon afterwards was found lying dead on the floor of a nearby room. Apparently he had tripped on a step and hit his head when he fell. The police carried out a routine investigation.

Mr Young was appointed secretary of the Auckland Hotel Workers' Union in the 1920’s and became national secretary in 1932. London-born, he had earlier served with the New Zealand forces in the First World War.

He became president of the Auckland Trades Council in the 1940’s and was on the national executive of the Federation of Labour.

The breakaway Trade Union Congress involved Mr Young He became provisional chairman of this in 1950. and it was said that he made every effort to bring it together again with the Federation of Labour.

Mr Young was a member of the Legislative Council during its last year. He was also a prominent war supply worker in Government committees during the Second World War

The Leader of ‘he Opposition (Mr Nash) tonight paid a tribute to Mr Young “He was a great servant to the employees and proprietors in the hotel industry and his contribution to their welfare and its improvement has not been excelled.” Mr Nash said

“Mr Young was a valued member of the board, with a wide knowledge of the hotel industry, particularly industrial relations within it.” said Mr A M Satterthwaite. chair, man of the Tourist Hotel Corporation. “He was most attentive to the details of our various problems while showing the keenest interest in the development of the hotel and tourist industry His knowledge and experience will be greatly missed ”
