POLICE USE TEAR GAS

Demonstration By Children

(N.ZP.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SALISBURY (Southern Rhodesia*. Feb. 13. Police tonight used tear gas to disperse African school children demonstrating outside an African school in Salisbury’s Highfield township

The demonstration was apparently in protest against the allocation of school places. Earlier today about 200 children had been dispersed without the use of tear gas in a similar demonstration. They had been addressed by an unidentified African man who led them to the offices of the Highfield Management Board.

Two school inspectors were stoned at the same school on February 9 after they had told children there were no vacancies. Police then used tear gas to disperse over 1000 people who gathered outside the school.

The secretary of the Highfield Management Board (Mr K. Gatu) said that more than 1000 children in the township between four and 15 were without school places.
