Untidy Beaches

Sir, —Has any attempt ever been made to clean up the beaches around Christchurch? The North Brighton beach, it seems, is a dumpingground for any unwanted junk from motorcar bodies to feather mattresses. Bits of rusty tin and broken bottles are scattered like confetti all along Pegasus Bay. If our irresponsible citizens must consume beer from warm bottles on warm summer days at the beach, could we not encourage them to take back the empties by fixing a levy of a shilling on each bottle. This would be refunded when the empty bottle was returned to the bottle store. I must be only one of dozens who suffer from cut feet at the beach; but worse still is the constant vigil for bits of glass where children are playing My child had a badly cut hand through digging up a broken bottle someone had buried. These, beaches are a disgrace. Let us clean them up before they become uninhabitable.—Yours etc.,

L. TYNE February 14. 1962.
