messing about in boats

Scratch An R class dinghy brought from Timaru last week will be the scratch boat of its class at the Pleasant Point Yacht Club. It is Caprice, whose former owner was T. Smith. It has been acquired by R. A. Allen,

who will skipper it with D. Vincent as crew. Both boys went over to Mount Pleasant for a trial sail last week-end. Their first chance to show their paces in a big fleet will be on Sullivan Cup day on March 18. Allen formerly skippered the Idlealong Sharloo.

Zephyrs The round-bilge oneman Zephyr class will make its appearance in numbers on Lyttelton Harbour next season. A small fleet has been organised by Charteris Bay officials to meet a demand for light-weight monotype sailing. At least six members of the club have hulls on order from Mr D. Townsend, of Auckland, the major stronghold cf the class in New Zealand. The hulls are due to be shipped south in a month or two and the yachtsmen will finish them off and rig them during the winter. Among those who will be seen at the helms of Zephyrs are Messrs I. Currie, the Charteris Bay commodore; H. Smart, founder of the club; W. Brandt, racing secretary; and J. Fletcher, S. Boanaa and N. Dickey.
