ADDINGTON MARKET Firmer Trend For Steers And Heifers

With a smaller entry of fat cattle, steers and heifers showed a definite firming in values at Addington Market yesterday. Steers lifted by 30s to 40s a head and heifers by about 30s, but cows tended to be cheaper by about 20s in sympathy with the drop in the export schedule.

Another reduced fat sheep yarding also made for increased competition on quality lines and wethers firmed by 3s to 4s a head for medium-weight two-tooths and the best butchers’ ewes with good pelts were dearer by a similar amount. Fat lambs tended to hold fully firm in a slightly increased offering.

FAT LAMBS

Another moderate entry of fat lambs totalled I<M7 head, compared with 1306 last week, but there were fewer heavy lambs and an almost total absence of the extra heavy lambs which were forward last week. Quality, however, was quite good. There was keen competition from the trade for medium to heavy sorts with freezing company buyers again supporting the market for lighter weights. Odd grazier bids were received on the plainer and unfinished pens. Values generally held fully firm on last week and the current range of values was unchanged. The sale was topped by Mrs D. M. Bennett (Cheviot) with a pen at 57s Id and sales at 54s id were made by the estate G. O. Arres (Waikari) and J. H. Jackson (Jacksons). A Swannanoa vendor sold a pen at 53s Id. With another moderate yarding of fat sheep which totalled 2561 head, compared with 2751 last week there urns keen competition for the better quality pens.

Values for two-tooth wethers opened at about late rates but soon began to firm and mediumweights were dearer overall by about 3s to 4s a heed. Heavier sorts which were not tn big numbers did not show the same appreciation but were definitely firmer. Wholesale interests increased competition for the light to medium weights. Older wethers met about the same demand and values held unchanged.

A very firm sale for good butchers' ewes resulted in prices firming by 3s to 4s a head on sheep with good pelts and most other classes firmed bv about 2s. There was a very < good demand for light-weight sorts which tn some cases : appeared at a slight premium. R H. Maidens (Lauriston) again topped the wether sale with a line of 18 which made from 60s Id to 63s Id with eight at the top figure. E. J. and R B. Lilley (Rakaia) sold 10 at 56s Id and the same price - was also gained by J Upritchard (Cheviot). FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry totalled 313 head, compared with 343 last week, and the smaller offering resulted in Improved competition for the quality cattle Several trucks of heavy steers were included in the entry, and these met a very ready sale. Steers were generally dearer by about 30s to 40s a head and heifers firmed by about 30s The market opened on the improved level and this was maintained throughout with competition as keen at the end of the sale as it was at the outset.

Cows however, tended to meet a slightly weaker market probably in sympathy with the drop in the export schedule, and most values were cheaper by about 20s a head.

The market for steers was topped by G. Steele (Port Levy) with a massive Friesian bullock which realised £5l 17s 6d. the highest price paid In the market for some time. McDonnell Bros (Totara Flat) again forwarded a truck of 10 which made from £45 17s 6d to £49 7s 6d. with three at the higher figure and the average for the truck was £43 5s Last week a truck of 10 from the same vendors averaged £47 Ils The estate J.
