The hijackers of the liner Santa Maria had committed “an act of murder” in killins’ the third officer of the ship, a Lisbon Court was told today. The master of the Santa Maria, Captain Simoes Maia, said there had been no fighting when the hijackers took over the liner. The third officer had asked the rebels: “What do you want?” and was then shot dead, Captain Maia said. The Court is trying in their absence, Captain Henrique Galvao and General Humberto Delgado, the chief

opponents of the Portuguese dictator, Dr. Salazar, and 31 others on murder and attempted murder charges arising from the Santa Maria episode in January last year. The 31 are members ot Captain Galvao’s rebel band and crew of the Santa Maria who defected to him.
