Croquet L. W. MIDDLEMISS WINS MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP
Highlight of the day’s play in the New Zealand croquet championships yesterday, was the final of the men’s championship between L. Middlemiss (Pukekohe) and F W Gurnsey (Christchurch). The first game was mostly in and out play, with no all-round breaks. In the second game, however, Gurnsey made a fine break to four-back Middlemiss shot in and also made some nice breaks, but a tactical error at rover cost him the game in a thrilling finish.
Middlemiss won his first national title after playing some excellent shots in tile third game. Gurnsey hit in, but faltered somewhat in his break play. Results were:— Men’s Championship Final.—L. Middlemiss (Pukekohe) beat F. W. Gurnsey (Christchurch). 26-17, 24-26, 26-9.
Open Championship - oi-final.—Mrs B. A. Jarden (Lower Hutt) beat Mrs W. L. Martin (Christchurch). 26-5, 26-8.
Women’s Championship First Life.—Final: Mrs R. H Browne (Dannevirke) beat Mrs
W. L. Martin (Christchurch). 26-23. Handicap Singles English Rose Bowl—Semi-final: Mrs N. Daly (Christchurch) (3) beat Mrs A. Mclnnes (Christchurch) (24) 26-25. F' I.—J. Campbell (Otahuhu) (24) beat Mrs Daly, 26-6. Hurlingham Cup. Second round: Mrs L. Middlemiss (P"';ekohe) (—l4) beat D Turner (Christchurch) (3). 26-18.
Quarter-final. —Mrs B. A. Jarden (Lower Hutt) (—2J) beat Mrs L. Middlemiss (Pukekohe) (—l4), 26-8.
