LAWN TENNIS Seeded Players Defeated In Junior Tourney

Following the tradition m junior tournaments, seeded players were eliminated in large numbers when the Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship tournament was continued at Wilding Park yesterday. In one event, the under-15 girls’ singles, all seeded players have been beaten before the semi-finals. Perhaps the juniors have not yet brought to their games the consistency of per. formance upon which seedings can be best made. Also, the entry of a number of players from outside Christchurch. some of them very good, has upset the seedings on several occasions. The third-seeded J. Cullington entered the final of the boys’ under-19 singles with a three-set win over G. G. Fold, seeded first. Cullington took the first set when he twice broke Ford's service, but the red-headed Ford took the second set comfortably From leads of 3-0 and 4-1 Ford frittered away his chances in the final set.

Cullington served very well on occasions, and his ground shots were hit with power. Ford was playing a more thoughtful game, and for a long period it seemed that he would prevail, but in the end his lack of power told against him as he could not keep Cullington away from the net. Miss L. Cullen, from Southland. beat the top-seeded Miss P. Craythorne (Ashburton) to enter the final of the girls’ under-19 singles. Miss Cullen plays a powerful game. Her final opponent today will be Miss D. Corich, who beat her Fernside-Kaia-poi team-mate Miss L. Ashby comfortably after a struggle in the first two sets.

One seeded player, D. Thom, fell by the wayside in the boys’ under-17 singles. He was beaten by an accomnlished Nelson player. C Hunt. Hunt was too solid for Thom. The three too seeds, R McCutcheon. W. Edgecombe and I. Stanton, have joined Hunt in the semi-finals. Early Casualty Miss S. Mac Neill, seeded third and a member of this year’s Howe Shield team, was an early casualty in the girls’ under-17 singles, she lost to Miss F Thomson in a long match. 6-4, 4-6. 4-6. Miss Thomson had also narrowly beaten Miss Mac Neill in the junior final in the secondary schools’ championships last month. Miss Mac Neill had her chances, as she won the first set and held leads of 3-1 and 4-2 in the second. Games went evenlv in the third set, with Miss Mac Neill struggling hard to hold her service for 4-all, but that was her last effort. A little more consistency on the backhand, and better-length drives. won this match for Miss Thomson

Miss P. Jordan, of Snrings. who had also had a hard second-round match (she beat Miss M. Sewell. 6-3. 5-6, 6-5) beat Miss Thomson without difficulty in the next round The score was 6-3. 6-0. The top-seed. Miss H. Bruce of Ashburton, appears to be a class above the other players in this event.

The under-15 boys’ singles proceeded more or less according to plan, with J. Mitchell I Behrnes and J. Sprackett, seeded players, coming through to the semifinals. Mitchell has been in good form throughout and Sprackett, with his 6-1. 6-1 defeat of R. Mangos, served notice that he would be a hard opponent. Good Dunedin Player

It was in the under-15 girls’ singles that the seeded players fared worst, and it was a visitor from Dunedin, Miss M. Hamilton, who did most damage. She eliminated the top-seeded Miss J. Coombes by the surprising margin of 6-0, 6-3. Miss Hamilton puts a lot of slice on her shots, and this worried Miss Coombes The Dunedin girl had won her two previous matches without the loss of a game. The second-seeded Miss J. Bell was narrowly defeated by Miss P. Gleesop in an interesting match. ' The lefthanded Miss Gleeson hit hard on her forehand, and worried Miss Bell into errors. Miss

Bell lost a lot of points on her forehand, seeming, to hit carelessly without sufficient firmness in her grip of the racket. She led .4-1 and 5-2 in the first set, and 3-2 in the second, but succumbed to Miss Gleeson’s determined recovery on each occasion. Miss J. Mitchell and Miss P. McLean, the other two seeded players in this event, were eliminated by Misses M. Bignell and R. Waites respectively. Miss Waites, a very tall girl, beat Miss McLean. 6-2, 6-1, and was impressive with the severity of her game. Results were:— UNDER 19 Boys* Singles Second Round.—G. G. Ford beat B. Cook. 6-2, 6-4; J.
