KRAMER’S TROUPE

City Matches In March

J. Kramer’s professional tennis troupe will play at Wilding Park on Sunday, March 4 and Monday, March 5. The team, comprising A. Gimeno, L. Ayala, K. Rosewall, F. Sedgman and possibly B. Mac Kay and E. Bucholz, will arrive from Sydney on March 1 and depart for Dunedin the same day.

This information was received at last evening’s meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association.

To give the Canterbury tennis team an extra day’s practice before its Slazenger Shield challenge match against Auckland in Auckland, the team will travel on the morning of Wednesday, February 15, not on the Thursday as previously arranged. The match in Auckland will be played on February 15 and 16 if Auckland survives a challenge from Wellington on February 9 and 10. A net profit of £IXO was returned at the Canterbury championships, said ‘ the secretary of the association (Mr A. H. McCormack). An application from Miss J. Mollins to wear a Canterbury blazer was referred to the Canterbury women’s selector (Miss P. Cuddon).

L. W. Watkins Hurt

An unexpected helper at the Canterbury junior lawn tennis championships, which began at Wilding Park yesterday, was L. W. Watkins, the province's top junior player. He was to have been one of the province's entrants in the B.P. national secondary schools’ tournament at present in progress in Hamilton.

In reaching the semi-finals of the national boys’ under--19 singles in Auckland last week, Watkins injured a shoulder. On the last day of the tournament he informed his team manager, Mr S. T. Day, that he would be unable to play in the schools’ tournament, and R ,G. Hastie, of the Cashmere club, was chosen to take his place.
