N.Z. GROCERY SERVICES
Comparison With
Australia
Housewives in New Zealand were far better off than their counterparts in Australia. said Mr E. J. Nieass,
leader of a group of 16 independent Australian grocers. when he arrived in Christchurch at the week-
end. He said that New Zealand housewives still had marvel- !■ us grocery services available to them. In Australia
vicious competition and price merchandising had drastically cut delivery and credit services.
The housewife with children is really up against it in Australia.” he said. Six years ago about 50 or 60 per cent <-i sales were on delivery, but he doubted if it was 6 per cent, today The ndependent grocers amed the large proprietary ains and claimed they ere not doing the public a ivour. “We independents endeavour to give service, something the proprietary chains with their high overhead cannot afford to give With every order.” he said. The 16-man party, which arrived in New Zealand on January 14, came primarily to attend a grocery organisation convention at the Chateau Tongariro. Since then the members of the party have been sightseeing. They left Christchurch by air for Melbourne yesterday afternoon.
