SHARK MADE HIM JUMP
Fisherman’s Near Miss
(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, January 29. Timaru fishermen are familiar with what are known locally as “porpoise” sharks. Mr C. I. Solomon, a member of the crew of the fishing vessel Seafarer, “jumped for his life” when such a shark, netted off Timaru on Saturday, snapped at him while he was mending a net. “I was tempted to jump overboard, it was that cloee,” said Mr Solomon this evening. The Seafarer, skipoered by Mr W. Taipana, of Seadown, was fishing about 40 miles off Timaru in 55 fathoms. The catch of cod was hauled aboard, and the head of a shark was seen. Mr Taipana hit it on the head with a hammer, which “bounced off ” Thereon the 6ft shark, which had been lying docile, leaped into the air and took a “ferocious bite at Mr Solomon’s buttocks." The shark was about sft in girth, a black variety, as yet unidentified, which Mr Solomon, a seasoned fisherman, is convinced was a man-eater The shark was hung by the tail from the mast but it took more than an hour to die "It Is the bigeest we have seen,” Mr Taipana said Its tail was shaped like that of a porpoise, he added
