Evolution

Sir, —In “Frontiers of Science. Evolution —Part 4" published in your issue of January 19 reference is made to Darwin’s “Great inspiration that it was the struggle for existence that decided . . . the variant most fitted to survive. Here was the mechanism which Darwin called natural selection — which had produced all species of life on earth

. . !!” Darwin was certainly the great prophet of evolution, as it happened, partly through luck and Thomas Huxley, partly through hard work and good management. But he was not the originator of the ideas or the expressions of the struggle for existence, natural selection, or the survival of the fittest. You will. I know, agree that care should be exercised where the truth is concerned. One is sometimes tempted to say, Man does not live by bread alone but by every mis-statement that drops from the lips of his neighbour.”—Yours, etc., TOERET January 21, 1962.
