BOOS FOR TENOR
Parma Crou d Criticised
(N.Z PA.-Reuter—Copyright) PARMA (Northern Italy), Opera lovers of Parma have staunchly defended their right to boo and whistle a singer they consider unsatisfactory. Last week a young tenor fled weeping from the stage after hoots and boos greeted his performance in ‘‘La Traviata." Arthuro Basile, conductor at the Parma Opera House, said in a public debate that such behaviour was “inhuman,” bad-mannered and scared the wits out of young singers. But his plea was rejected by the gallery. One of them, Enrico Carra. a porter who claims to know the entire Italian opera repertory by heart, declared: “We don't whistle to disturb the peace. It is a spontaneous reaction, a t ntter of conscience whenever a singer makes a mistake.” Other speakers said: “This is the town of Verdi and we cannot allow his works to be badly performed." and “If a man can’t sing, he should take up another trade.”
