MURDER OF WIFE
Man Gaoled For Life (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BRISBANE. January 21. A Supreme Court jury found a Dutch immigrant. Hendirikus Plomp, aged 31, guilty of murdering his wife, Fay Irene Plomp, aged 23, at Main beach, Southport, near Briebane, on February 24 last year. Mrs Plomp drowned while surfing at the beach. Mr Justice Stanley sentenced Plomp to life imprisonment with hard labour Earlier Mr Justice Stanley rejected a defence counsel plea that the Crown had failed to make out a case against Plomp Plomp did not give or call evidence in his defence The Crown alleged that Plomp deliberately drowned his wife because he was not in a happy relationship with her and did not want a child she was expecting. Plomp’s counsel (Mr E. G. Broad) in his address to the jury, said the Crown case showed no unlawful killing whatsoever. The Crown had brought a mass of evidence to show Plomp was a man of immoral character involved in relationships with other women. “This is not a Court of morals, but a Court of law,” he said.
