GAY FILOU UNBEATEN
Good Win At Trentham
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON Jan. 22
Gay Filou has come through the Wellington cup meeting with an unbeaten record.
He wan the high-weight an Saturday and was much too good today for the other hack stayers in the Ruapehu Handicap. The Ricoarton trainer. I. McClure, said today that Gay Filou would not race again at the meeting. “It might be asking a bitt much to give him three races at the meeting, because he has not done much racing and is still a bit inexperienced.” McClure said.
Gay Filou, a four-year-old Le Filou gelding owned by Messrs D. D. Fea, of Winton, and R. Smith, of Christchurch, will have a chance, depending on his weight, to run out hack nominations at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting. Pace Absent
If there was any distinguishing feature about the Ruapehu Handicap it was the marked absence of pace. The race developed into a sharp sprint for the last half-mile. N. Eastwood kept Gay Filou up in front and could not have had him better placed for the sprint home. Gay Filou showed he had a better sprint than any of the others and won going away by nearly three lengths from the top-weight. Wild Duck. Anahiiita and Wonder Girl were almost in line in the next two places. Straight Irish, the 2/3 favourite, did not handle the ground well and was well beaten into sixth.
