500 Fail To Register
It was assumed by the Labour Department yesterday that 500 youths in the Christchurch area had failed to register for military training. A spokesman for tihe department said that those who had failed to register would be liable for military braining.
Today the first ballot will be held in Wellington, and alittough no official direction bad been received yesterday it was presumed that those youths who had not registered would be directed straight. into camp. A departmental spokesman said that 1952 youtshs in the Christchurch area had registered. The department had ways of tracing those who had not registered. By checking registrations under the previous act the department had been able to notify some youths of their new obligations, and there had been a good response to these warning letters, he said.
Those required to register are youths bom between July 1, 1941, and June 30, 1942. Initial training is for 14 weeks, then 20 days through the next three yeans. At the end of this period trainees will be placed on the Reserve for three years.
